FINDING YOUR WHY
A question: Why are people employees?
A. They love leaving their house every day to sit all day in a cubicle.
B. They enjoy being micromanaged, backstabbed, and treated as pawns in corporate politics.
C. They would turn up every day even if they were not being paid because they believe wholeheartedly in their employerâs company vision.
D. None of the above.
Correct answer for people who are too old for this sh*tâD!
Companies purport to provide a strong employee culture by supporting their employees through employee engagement programs, inspiring them with a company vision, and expecting employees to buy into their âWhy?â Donât get me wrong. I love Simon Sinekâs concept of âStart with Why,â but I believe we need our own why, not some companyâs.
In one of my corporate roles, the executive team workshopped the companyâs vision, mission, values, and whys. Then having congratulated themselves on this achievement, they set about âbrainwashingâ each staff member to believe that was the reason why they got out of bed every day to come to the office. Really?
There were umbrellas, reusable coffee mugs, mouse pads, shopping bags, key rings, and torches emblazoned with the companyâs âwhyâ handed out to staff.
Staff were measured on how well they lived the âwhyâ and the values. Try as I might, I could not replace my âwhyâ with the companyâs as my reason for turning up to the office each day. Although I didnât say it, my âwhyâ was to pay the bills, put my kids through school, and try to save for the future.
Letâs face it, even when people who want to grow further in their careers, and may genuinely do so to add value and enjoy more challenging roles, at the end of the day, most people wouldnât do this unless they were paid more money. Iâm sorry, but to an employee, the company is a business transaction providing mutual benefits.
